Position Summary:
Network Engineering is part of a Network Operations Team that provides network services to campus faculty, staff, students and guests. Network Engineering and Net Ops is part of Enterprise Infrastructure (EI) Division in the Department of Office of Information Technology (OIT) providing centralized support services and partnering with campus faculty, researchers and staff.
Under general supervision of the Manager, OIT Network Engineering, the Network Engineer is part of a network engineering team responsible for managing a wide variety of services in support of the campus network. Duties include assisting with the planning, design, security product evaluation/specification, installation, upgrade, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and performance optimization of the campus networks. Primary responsibility for the network includes the routers, switches, cable plant, and wireless infrastructure. Provides a moderate level of technical expertise, and serves as a consultant, answering technical questions, providing network analysis and problem resolution, recommending appropriate network designs and solutions to problems, and planning and participating in network implementations. UCI's primary campus network (UCInet) is a complex network, employing some of the latest available technology. It consists of a fiber optic 100 gigabit Ethernet TCP/IP backbone with twisted-pair and fiber optic cable serving the building LANs, utilizing routers, switches and wireless infrastructure. UCInet is a critical service for the campus, providing access to electronic mail, campus resources, national supercomputer centers, other universities, and the Internet. UCI's other networks include: Residential Network Services (ResNet) is the network infrastructure within the student housing complexes where over 7500 students and families live. This network consists of over 400 Cisco Routers, switches, and network security controls. Facilities Network (FACnet) is a network infrastructure for critical Building Management Systems (BMS) controls and communications. Devices with limited security controls and high security needs are placed in this separate network. The Lightpath Network is a research network with low-latency, high-speed connectivity for high bandwidth data transmission.
Compensation Range: Commensurate with experience
Required:
- Three (3) to five (5) years of applicable experience and BA/BS, or one (1) to three (3) years of applicable experience and MA/MS OR equivalent experience.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Ability to analyze and troubleshoot moderately complex network problems with some assistance from the Senior Network Engineers.
- Ability to Identify, recommend and implement appropriate solutions and keep clients informed until problems have been resolved.
- An advanced working knowledge of and experience with the design, installation and technical support of network infrastructure including cable systems, network hardware, network software, IP addresses, network protocols, LANs and WANs in a large campus network environment.
- Experience installing, configuring, upgrading, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing Ethernet routers, switches and wireless network infrastructure.
- Strong communication and interpersonal/people skills.
- Ability to maintain a positive attitude, and to work effectively as an individual contributor, a team leader, and as a team member to achieve the goals of the department.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Good technical writing and documentation skills.
- Working knowledge of and experience with computer systems (PC, Mac), operating systems (Unix, Windows and Mac OS).
- Working knowledge of and experience with the Internet.
- Ability to update web pages using content management systems.
- Working knowledge of and experience with network management, test equipment, and experience using this equipment to troubleshoot problems and recommend appropriate solutions.
- Strong working knowledge of and experience with TCP/IP network protocol and a general knowledge of other protocols.
- Experience implementing and maintaining a secure network and a secure network operations environment.
- Experience with Bind DNS and the ability to update, monify and support DNS servers.
- Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 3 protocols at a basic level and layer 2 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
- Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.
- Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
- Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated diverse problem-solving skills.
Preferred:
- Direct experience installing, configuring, maintaining, upgrading and troubleshooting Cisco Routers, switches and other Cisco network products.
- General knowledge of industry wiring standards.
- End-user experience using a database for inventory and record keeping purposes.
- Experience administrating and supporting LTM and Global DNS on F5 Platform.
- Ability to evaluate, recommend, implement test and support hardware and software solutions for network applications.
Special Conditions Required:
Works on a flexible schedule and may be required to work outside normal business hours to perform network installations, upgrades, cutovers, and maintenance. Participates in an on-call rotation for after-hours support of the network.
Must possess a valid California Driver's License and participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
