Led by Dr. Usama Fayyad, the Institute for Experiential AI (IEAI) is built around the challenges and opportunities made possible by human-machine collaboration. The institute provides a framework to design, implement, and scale AI-driven technologies in ways that make a true difference to society. Located in Portland, Maine, with the goal of growing the Maine tech economy, the Roux Institute will be a center of activity for the Institute's efforts.

The Opportunity:This position affords the successful candidate a unique platform to make an impact across both academia and industry. The Director, AI Solutions Factory & Residency Program will lead our AI Solutions practice and interface with industry partners and by deploying our resources helping them shape their AI/technology journey.
The ideal candidate has both industry and academic expertise with a well-rounded knowledge in the fields of data science, machine learning, and AI. This position requires an innate ability to navigate a complex academic environment and utilizing the University's resources (faculty & staff) to implement programs and projects for industry partners. As such, this position is client-facing and will be responsible for the successful delivery of client-mandates. With its unique structure, AI Solutions Factory will also deliver practicum courses, giving learners the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in real-world projects.
Responsibilities:Director of AI Solutions Factory and Residency Program is a unique opportunity for a senior leader to shape an innovative consulting delivery model that maintains strong industry focus within a leading academic institution. The Factory is the most critical offering of the Institute that will leverage data science and AI capabilities at the Institute and across the University to solve the most challenging AI problems in the world. Responsibilities of the Director include:
Support the Business Development team to scope opportunities and develop solutions
Lead a team of staff data scientists and data engineers as well as consultants/project managers to deliver projects in AI to clients across a wide variety of industries
Oversee the continuous development of data infrastructure and related tools and technologies in AI to serve the needs of the Institute and AI faculty at the University
Work with the academic units at the University to deliver practicum courses as part of the Factory, giving learners the opportunity to work with real data on real world problems during their education
Work with research faculty to develop AI products to serve the emerging needs of organizations in areas such as responsible AI, cybersecurity and life sciences
Manage a variety of client engagement models, including a membership driven lab
Build strong rapport across client organizations, including C-suite to drive AI agenda and develop long-term relationships

Direct Reports:
The Director, AI Solutions Factory & Residency Program will lead the following team:
Head of Data Science and Data Engineering: Managing the data infrastructure and assets of the Institute, delivering data science projects at the AI Solutions Factory.
Head of Academic Programs: Developing and managing practicum courses delivered around projects at the Factory (curriculum, teaching, student experience etc.). Team would include lecturers, program coordinators and potentially teaching staff.
Head of AI Solutions Factory: Delivering consulting projects to corporate partners. Will manage IEAI resources (data scientists and engineers) as well as researchers, postdocs and faculty across NU. Team will include project managers and product managers (for any AI products developed at the Institute)
Head of IEAI Lab: Manages the membership based lab by coordinating resources across the Institute and NU, puts together membership programs, events.
Qualifications:
Masters or PhD degree in Statistics, Operations Research, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science, or Engineering, or in a related field
Prior leadership positions in a global business or consulting enterprise overseeing projects and initiatives in the areas of data science and machine learning
Experience in directly managing data science teams, technical resources and relevant technology stack
Experience in an academic environment in a teaching and curriculum development capacity strongly preferred
Ability to communicate, lead and manage effectively across academia and industry.
High EQ and comfortable in leading and managing across academia and industry.
Entrepreneurial mind-set with an ability to navigate complex structures and processes.
Ability to act both as a leader and mentor to junior technical talent.
