UW-IT is the central IT organization for the University of Washington, providing critical technology support to all three campuses, UW medical centers and global research operations. UW-IT collaborates with University partners to advance teaching, learning, innovation and discovery at the UW. IT Infrastructure (ITI) within UW-IT provides system design, system management, software engineering and operational support for academic and administrative systems, the University’s wired and wireless networks, telecommunications services, departmental IT and the UW-IT organization.
The Resource Manager position is responsible for managing and developing technical staff within Information Technology Infrastructure (ITI), including supervision, technology needs assessment, technology skills planning and development, technical resource allocation among projects and services, team building, professional development, and organization development. This position will work closely with the ITI AVP, Directors, Resource Managers, Project Managers, Service Owners, and Service Managers to ensure that all projects and services are optimally staffed for achieving technology project and service goals, while also encouraging the professional development of employees. This includes the facilitation of moving people to new services or projects to further their professional development as well as bring new perspectives to an effort.
The Resource Manager position manages staff in support of UW-IT and ITI projects and services. ITI provides system and network design and administration, software and network engineering, and operational support for academic systems and networks, administrative systems, and research computing.
This position requires an experienced technology manager who will be responsible for overseeing, planning, leading and coordinating technical engineering staff on project and service needs, in support of service and project teams, and other staff working on a variety of computing and networking services and projects.
The Resource Manager is expected to Have a solid understanding of UW-IT’s services and projects, and the technology required to support them. This position should understand how these fit into their respective portfolios--and how they fit into ITI and UW Information Technology strategy. Understand the technical and political environment of services and projects being managed. Continually work to improve and support all processes and services to ensure we are providing a high level of service availability and support. Help provide staffing and skill development for both new and ongoing projects and services. Manage work allocations, effort forecasts, and reporting on time spent. Provide consultation to leadership, support teams, project managers, service managers, and other technical staff. Mentor staff and advocate for professional growth development. Resolve any project or service challenges that arise.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Science, or Business or discipline-related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Four years of progressively responsible experience in information technology systems engineering, management, or operations. Experience managing information technology resources in a complex technical and political landscape with a large heterogeneous distributed computing environment. Ability to negotiate with and provide consultation to executive leadership, support teams, project managers, service managers, and other technical staff. Proven track record of mentoring and advancing staff development and career growth. Demonstrated ability to set and meet goals, assess resource needs, allocate staff, and communicate status. Ability to quickly find common ground and resolve any project or service challenges that arise; is seen as a collaborator and team player, easily secures trust and support of peers and staff. High degree of emotional intelligence (self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, agility, adaptability, and persuasiveness). Demonstrated success in continually working to improve and support all processes and services to ensure we are providing a high level of service availability and support. Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.
DESIRED REQUIREMENTS Experience in a major research university. Experience leading cross-functional teams. Experience in hiring technical staff. Knowledge in one of the following technology suites: Unix Development and Operations, Java Development, Web, Database, Development Tools, Windows Development and Operations, .NET, Storage Engineering and Operations, and Applications Engineering. Experience in IT Service Management, Project Management, and Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) fundamentals.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT This position leads, manages, and contributes to work in a collaborative hybrid team environment, supported through a shared working environment, scheduled and ad hoc meetings, and the use of a variety of development and communication tools. The incumbent may need to respond to staffing requirements for service incidents, outages, service or project needs, and respond to customer questions on a priority/urgency basis. The incumbent may need to work varied hours to meet priority project milestones and other externally imposed deadlines and to accomplish work assignments on which the activities of others depend. May travel on occasion for training and conferences.
