Department Overview
This position is responsible for managing the University Business Intelligence (UnBI) team to ensure performance that promotes excellent customer service, overall service excellence philosophy and the successful implementation and growth of Business Intelligence (BI) and analytics at OHSU. The UnBI manager serves as the central resource and leader for the provision of data and the management of data warehouse systems, information and BI tools supporting business intelligence for all of OHSU's various missions and business process (Healthcare, Central Services, Academic Schools, Research Institutes and Administration). This position's main areas of focus are (1) staff management including, recruitment, development, retention, accountability and oversight of work products; (2) collaboration with key stakeholders to understand requirements and create key analytics solutions to meet their needs; (3) Initiative leadership and project management including, proposing new project efforts, identifying resources, and leading the development, and implementation of technology-based Business Intelligence (BI) solutions;
Function/Duties of Position
Staff Management and Team Leadership.
- Manages the University Business Intelligence (UnBI) team which consists of Senior System Application Analysts and Application Engineers.
- Manages employees by communicating job expectations, appraising job results, coaching and motivating employees.
- Define team goals, lead staff to achieving desired results, and be accountable for team performance.
- Conducts regular staff meetings to communicate the goals and objectives of team projects, as well as ITG and OHSU current activities. Establish and require compliance with standards for work intake, processing, change management, and documentation.
- Through staff, deliver dashboards, reports, BI tool training and data in a timely and effective manner.
- Lead staff in efforts to expand skills, improve BI processes, develop and implement new systems and expand data warehousing and related BI capabilities to further the OHSU BI strategy.
- As a member of the BIAA Leadership team assist in defining and implementing organizational goals and strategic plans.
- Participate in the planning and review of annual operating budgets for staff salaries and associated expenses to ensure budget targets are met.
Stakeholder Management. - Act as central point of contact and recognized expert representing UnBI at OHSU.
- Work through established committees and key business partners to help prioritize work and disseminate information about BI projects, capabilities, and limitations.
- Lead delivery of reporting and analytical solutions that meet stakeholder needs and facilitate data-driven insight into business performance, issues and initiatives.
- Educate management and staff on opportunities to leverage BI technology to improve OHSU financial, clinical, and operational performance.
Initiative Leadership and Project Management - Identify and outline project proposals to address new stakeholder needs and maintain BI systems.
- This includes creating capital funding proposals outlining labor, software and associated expenses as well as potential ROI.
- Implement approved capital and operating Business Intelligence project by developing detailed project plans with dependencies and critical path tasks using the BIAA SDLC model, Smartsheet, Jira, MS Teams and other project management tools.
- Identify project and task completion milestones and report to sponsors and steering committees when they are not met or are at risk.
- Provide progress reports, schedule and prepare relevant meeting materials to conduct progress meetings.
- Manage projects such as data warehouse development, data mart development, third party software selection and implementation/integration.
- Mentor other BI team members in project management.
- Plan and monitor project expenses and budgets to ensure delivery within approved budget.
This position is currently 100% telework/remote and may include remote work long-term. Candidate must be able to work from home full-time initially.
Required Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in business or computer science or related field and six years' work-related experience in the information technology field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience Experience:
- Must have 8 years of cumulative paid working experience in the information technology field; OR equivalent combination of education and experience where two years of experience will be substituted for an Advanced degree.
- Three or more years supervising/leading technical teams
- Two years or more paid work experience as a Project Manager or leadership position
- Five or more years of experience in BI development, implementation, support or project management.
- Five years of experience working with a BI reporting tool as a report writer, business/systems analyst, or trainer.
- Proven leadership and team mentoring skills shown to lead teams toward organizational goals with successful outcomes
- Significant organizational skills and ability to lead projects from conception, schedule, design, testing, through implementation.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies):
- Must have excellent communication, analytical, and organizational skills: both written and verbal.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy to maintain effective working relationships.
- Knowledge of software development life-cycle and production environment procedures.
- Effective leadership of highly-skilled, technical personnel in overseeing the development and implementation of BI solutions.
- Ability to develop and drive enhancements to processes and procedures
- Experience in process improvement and change management tools and techniques
