Organizational Overview
The mission of the Collider-Accelerator Department (C-AD) is to operate, maintain, improve, and upgrade the suite of electron, proton, and heavy ion accelerators used to carry out a program of accelerator-based experiments at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). To support this program, the C-AD must design, fabricate, assemble, test, install, and operate unique research equipment to generate, transport, transfer, accelerate, focus, track, collide, and absorb high intensity particle beams up to energies of 250 GeV. This includes a combination of custom designed and built parts and vendor produced components developed by a collaboration of the C-AD scientific, engineering, and technical staff. The C-AD supports an international user community of over 1,500 scientists. The C-AD performs all these functions in an environmentally-responsible and safe manner, under a rigorous conduct of operations approach.

Position Description

Within the C-AD, the Accelerator Division has an opening for an experienced Engineering Manager and/or Cryogenic or Mechanical or Electrical Engineer to lead the C-AD Cryogenics Group. The C-AD Cryogenics Group is responsible for the operations, maintenance, and upgrade of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), Central Liquid Helium Refrigerator Plant (LHe plant) and distribution system. This system cools over 1000 RHIC superconducting magnets and superconducting RF (SRF) cavities. The RHIC LHe plant will be upgraded to increase the cold end capacity and improve efficiency in preparation for the Electron Ion Collider (EIC) operations. The C-AD cryogenics group is partnering with the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory to design, fabricate, and install new satellite plants and distribution systems that are needed for additional SC magnets and SRF cavities required for EIC. In addition, the C-AD Cryogenics Group operates a small LHe plant for the C-AD SRF cavity test facility. This facility is being upgraded to improve its capability and throughput including the procurement and installation of a larger 1kW4.5K LHe plant and LHe distribution system. The C-AD Cryogenics Group also supports other cryogenics systems throughout the BNL complex and participates in DOE level cryogenic reviews. This effort is being supported by a C-AD Cryogenics Group staff which includes 10 engineers consisting of plant process, mechanical, electrical, controls engineers, and system controls programmers. The group also includes 20 mechanical and electrical technicians or system operations, maintenance, repairs, and upgrades under supervision by a mechanical group technical supervisor and an electrical group technical supervisor. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Lead, coordinate, and supervise the operations of existing RHIC cryogenic systems and the development of system upgrades and new systems needed for RHIC and EIC. This will be from initial concept through engineering analysis, detailed design, procurement, documentation and fabrication drawings, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning.
• Working with the C-AD Cryogenic Group engineering supervisors and system and project leads in the engineering staff, manage and oversee individual engineering projects and the development of project plans including defining and documenting scope, labor and material resources, schedules, procurement plans, and subsequent tracking and reporting on these projects through to completion.
• Manage, supervise, and guide the C-AD Cryogenics Group staff.
• Maintain and develop the staff and infrastructure with high standards for quality of work and ensure that qualified staff are assigned to carry out the technical tasks.
• Hire and train new staff to meet anticipated workload requirements. Build and maintain a diverse and inclusive workforce in a professional, productive, respectful work environment.
• Interact with and report to the C-AD Chairperson and the C-AD Accelerator Division Head for assignments, guidance, and support. Collaborate with C-AD and EIC engineering and scientific group leaders and staff to provide Cryogenic systems requirements, interfaces, guidance, and support for the design of SRF cavities, superconducting magnet cryomodules, and other cryogenically cooled systems.
• Oversee the development of specifications, drawings, and other procurement documentation, the review of vendor proposals and bids, the interface and follow up with vendors/fabricators during manufacturing, travel for design meetings and the testing and commissioning of new systems.
• Present engineering and design presentations for BNL and Department of Energy reviews as well as advise and oversee the development and execution of reviews by the Cryogenic Group's engineering staff.
• Oversight of coordination of the technical staff for fabrication, assembly, testing and installation of equipment in the C-AD shops and facilities.
• Ensure that the group continues to follow BNL safety standards and national safety and equipment codes. Oversee the development of work planning procedures, hazard analyses, safety reviews, development of operating procedures manuals, and oversee the conduct of operations.

Position Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, or Marine Engineering.
• Minimum ten (10) years of full-time progressively responsible experience in the engineering and and/or operations of cryogenic systems, pressurized gas process plants or similar equipment and component systems.
• Experience working on creative engineering projects, collaborating with a team to develop, build, install and commission unique equipment. Experience supervising and leading engineering and technical staff to achieve system and project goals.
• Demonstrated ability to positively interact with and support customers and stakeholders, contractors, vendors, project management, and procurement professionals.
• Demonstrated experience organizing and presenting at engineering design and safety reviews and at cost and schedule reviews
• Project development and management experience and skills.
• Clear and concise written and oral communication and presentation skills.
• Proficient with MS Office - Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Graduate degree in Mechanical or Chemical Engineering or a closely related field.
• Experience interacting with scientific staff on design and construction projects.
• Experience with liquid Helium refrigerator plant systems and equipment.
• Project Management Professional certification.
• Familiarity with ASME BPVC VIII and ASME B31.3 Piping Code, CGA standards, OSHA requirements, ASCE standards, and building codes.
• Professional Engineering license.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

• Ability to climb ladders.
• Ability to work in Oxygen Deficiency Hazard area.
• Ability to work in High Noise environment.
• Individual will be required to become a qualified Radiation Worker and may be required to work in Radiation areas.
• May be required to occasionally work off-hours, nights or weekends to support operations.
