Post-Doctoral Research Cluster Hire Supporting High-Speed / Hypersonic Initiatives - Salaries Competitive with National Laboratories
The University of Tennessee Department of Mechanical Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering is seeking six exceptionally qualified candidates with expertise relevant to high-speed / hypersonic aerospace systems to help advance and execute the department's growing Aerospace & Defense research portfolio. Positions are available at both the University of Tennessee Space Institute campus in Tullahoma, Tennessee and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville campus.
Positions are immediately available, requiring excellent technical capabilities; strong interpersonal skills to facilitate engagement with a diverse group of collaborators, sponsors and students; and the ability to execute multiple projects in parallel. Direct experience across one or more of the following areas is highly desirable:
* High-Mach wind tunnel experimentation
* Optical diagnostic measurements (e.g., schlieren, laser diagnostics, paint-based measurements)
* High-fidelity numerical simulations of aerothermodynamic flows
* Numerical simulations of aerospace material and structural systems
* High-temperature materials
* Materials characterization
* High-speed propulsion
Eligible candidates will have completed a doctorate in Aerospace, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline within the last 3 years. Salary is competitive with national laboratories and industry commensurate with the requirements of the position and the applicant's experience. Tennessee has no state income tax, a relatively low cost-of-living, and is much prettier than the desert without the extreme cold of the Big 10 region.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Successful applicants must be able to work in an environment conforming to ITAR requirements and have a Ph.D. in an engineering discipline germane to high-speed/hypersonic aerospace systems.
The Department of Mechanical, Aerospace & Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee Knoxville is the epicenter of a growing aerospace and defense research portfolio that has garnered approximately $40M in external funding over the last seven years. Progress has been driven by explosive growth in research supporting high-speed/hypersonic national interests at both the University of Tennessee Space Institute in Tullahoma and on the main campus in Knoxville.
Aerothermodynamic and relevant propulsion experiments are performed at the Space Institute, which is home of the Tennessee Aerothermodynamics Laboratory (TALon). TALon facilities include two very large Ludwieg Tubes (Mach 4 24"x24" & Mach 7 18"x18" test sections) and more than $3M in state-of-the-art laser and imaging systems. Research advancing optical diagnostics, high-temperature materials and numerical simulations is performed on both campuses and all research efforts are highly coordinated across the team of faculty and affiliated researchers on both campuses.

The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) is a graduate education and research institution situated on 376 acres in Tullahoma, TN adjacent to the Air Force Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). Since UTSI's inception in 1964, over 2,700 graduate degrees have been awarded, including more than 265 doctorates, and 9 astronauts have earned MS degrees. UTSI alumni have become company presidents, chief scientists, engineering managers, and renowned scholars and scientists. Tullahoma is in southern, middle Tennessee and is less than 75 miles from three neighboring major cities: Nashville, Chattanooga, and Huntsville, AL.
The UTSI campus is one of the most beautiful in the country, located on a peninsula surrounded by one of the regions many lakes. Outdoor recreational opportunities abound, including outstanding hiking, camping, fishing, and golf.
The HORIZON team has specialized in developing experience in hypersonics within research staff transitioning from other scientific backgrounds. HORIZON's most recent post-doctoral research associate, Dr. Chris McKenna, whose PhD was accomplished in subsonic aerodynamics (and is now at Creare LLC), said the following about his two years at UTSI: "Coming to UTSI to work with the HORIZON group was the best thing I imagine I could have done for my career."
APPLICATION PROCESS: Applicants must apply online through the UTSI Employment website https://www.utsi.edu/about/campus-services/human-resources/employment-opportunities/) Click on "External Applicants" in the right-hand column. Specify search criteria by entering Tullahoma in the Location box. Click on position to view job description and/or apply. External candidates must create a new account to apply.
Potential candidates should attach the following documents to their online application: (1) an introductory letter that includes a statement on the candidate's ability to work in an ITAR environment, (2) a Curriculum Vitae, (3) a short statement of professional interests & future goals, and (4) the contact information for three references.
