The Department of Forest Engineering, Management, and Resources invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term, Research Associate position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.
This position will provide support and leadership within the Wildfire Analytics, Science and Planning lab at the College of Forestry at Oregon State University (the College). The College plays an important role in addressing wildfire risk challenges across the Pacific Northwest by synthesizing research, developing relevant analytics, and producing primary research products in coordination with partners to support decision making, strategic planning processes, adaptation to a rapidly changing environment, with a particular focus on adaptation of our relationship with fire and our wildfire management system.
The primary goal of this position is to support strategic wildfire risk reduction efforts by participating in, and sometimes leading co-produced science processes and products. This position may work on a multitude of projects within the lab, including work with the College and external partners including, but not limited to Tribes, communities, and state and federal land management agencies to:
Develop spatial datasets for wildfire risk analytics and provide project management of spatial data development
Collaboratively develop and maintain a statewide map of wildfire hazard and risk in Oregon, Washington and California
Support the development and application of applied wildfire risk sciences through peer-reviewed literature and other publications
Develop primary science supporting wildfire risk science and decision making for pre-, during, and post-fire management decisions
Advance ecological understanding of the application of fire in post-fire environments,
Evaluate the contributions of a network of Experimental Forest and Rangelands towards wildfire risk management,
Integrate Indigenous Knowledge with Western Science to explore holistic adaptation strategies,
Work on issues surrounding wildfires in the Wildland Urban Interface in collaboration with colleagues in the College of Engineering.

Requires PhD or terminal degree and experience in the academic discipline/unit.
Requirements :
Ph.D. in forest science, wildfire science, watershed science, data science, environmental social science, or a closely-related field;
Experience conducting statistical analyses and drawing relevant conclusions;
Experience using GIS software such as Esri ArcGIS Pro;
Experience with scientific computer programming in languages such as R and Python;
Familiarity working with large, complex datasets;
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a broad set of partners and stakeholders;
Excellent oral and written communication skills; and ability to engage respectfully with individuals from a variety of backgrounds and experiences

Type:
The proposed research will occur in an office setting, However, at times there will be opportunities to assist other projects with a field research component depending on interest and satisfactory progress on primary tasks. The work may require overnight travel for data collection or verification purposes, or for presentation of results. Remote work may be possible, as agreed upon by the employee and supervisor.
