Brown is rapidly expanding its focus on design engineering and entrepreneurship. The establishment and growth of the Jonathan M. Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship has created a strong entrepreneurial ecosystem across the university. The School of Engineering (SoE), in 2021, established a new Innovation Management & Design Engineering group (IMDE). Note that groups are department-like constructs in Brown?s SoE context. In 2021, a joint Masters of Art in Design Engineering (MADE) was introduced in partnership with the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), with the first class graduating in May 2022. The Masters in Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship program (PRIME) has experienced rapid growth, becoming the highest enrolling masters in SoE and one of the largest master programs on campus. The Masters of Technology Leadership (MTL) executive program, run in coordination with Brown?s School of Professional Studies, has also seen significant enrollment growth. SoE also introduced a new design engineering concentration (major) in 2023 for our rising undergraduate engineering students. A primary goal in these initiatives is to fuse design with technology innovation/ entrepreneurship to build translational capacity to help solve global challenges, with a focus on topical areas highlighted in Brown?s Strategic Plan.
To maintain this rapid growth and emerging impact trajectory, we seek to hire a faculty member with a stellar track record of research, technical accomplishments and/or practice contributing to design engineering, entrepreneurship, and technical leadership. The appointee will: a. Develop and maintain an active research program and/or practice engagement; b. Help develop and deliver a strong curricular vision for the SoE IMDE Group; c. Build fruitful relationships with the Nelson Center and other critical cross-campus stakeholders; and d. Play an integral role in strategic growth as a critical builder of design engineering and innovation management/ entrepreneurship capabilities within SoE. Applicants should hold a PhD in design, engineering, management or a related discipline. Applicants can receive courtesy appointments across engineering groups as applicable.
