A postdoctoral Associate position is available immediately. The successful candidate will join Principle Investigators in examining the response of fish to dredging of a sand deposit in inner-continental shelf waters. The approach covers several spatial and temporal scales through trawl survey, acoustic (side scan sonar), telemetry, and video imaging from an autonomous underwater vehicle and towed and moored equipment. Sand is in demand as a material for construction and beach replenishment, but its removal from marine habitats potentially conflicts with the management of living marine resources and needs investigation.

The position is based at the Rutgers University Marine Field Station in Tuckerton, New Jersey. The Associate will join the laboratory of Dr. Thomas Grothues and will manage and engage in day-to day activities of this project including literature review, cruise preparation, cruise participation, scheduling and oversight of technician tasks related to this project, data management, data analysis, reporting, and the preparation of manuscripts for submission to journals publishing peer-reviewed articles. The Associate will also participate in weekly meeting with the sponsor, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and in seasonal outreach meetings with stakeholders, and will participate in the mentoring of interns. We seek applications from candidates with experience or interest in fish ecology, fish behavior, and fisheries monitoring technology. Valued skills include all or some of the following: sonar processing and interpretation, community analysis, acoustic telemetry (especially fine scale positioning), experience with REMUS class autonomous underwater vehicles, and knowledge of Mid-Atlantic marine fish. Candidates should be willing to go to sea on a commercial fishing trawler as well as small coastal research vessels. The project is highly collaborative and interdisciplinary, and we invite applications from candidates who excel in team work environments and are interested in building a dynamic network of collaborators.

The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in biological sciences

Preference will be given to applicants with 1) expertise in marine fish ecology; 2) strong communication, team building, and organization skills; 3) ability to code in R, MatLab, or C++; and 4) have proven written and oral communication skills. Must be able to lift 45 lbs and possess a valid Driver's License.
